Girls Rock Philly is happy to announce that 2011′s camp showcase will be at World Cafe Live on Saturday, August 13th at noon!

Visit our first-ever Open House at GRP Headquarters at 1866 Sepviva Street! 

• From 2-5pm on Saturday, May 21st
• Hear camper bands & DJs
• Meet new & returning campers & volunteers
• Check out our space and gear (campers use for free all year!)
• Sample food & drink from neighborhood cafes & co-ops

GIRLS ROCK PHILLY EVENTS:

• Tuesday, February 8th: The Riot Grrl panel at Penn’s Writers House featuring Kathleen Hanna, Sara Marcus, Katy Otto & GRP’s Beth Warshaw-Duncan is full! BUT it will be simulcast & followed by a GRP benefit show at the Rotunda at 40th & Walnut.

• Monday, February 21st: The Ladies Rock Camp showcase at Tritone at 7pm! This is a 21+ show.

• Thursday, March 3rd: Camper band Shutdown Marmalade will be playing the Association for Women in Psychology national conference in a public show at the Hyatt on Penn’s Landing. Click here for more info.

• Saturday, March 5th: Camper band Queens of Heart will be playing a benefit & instrument drive for the Kearny Public School in Northern Liberties.

• And stay tuned for our April events, including PIFA & the 3rd annual Fishtown Shadfest.

And the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, made up of nearly 40 camps around the world has put together its very first camper band compilation album! GRP is repped on Track 16 by last year’s Queens of the Iron Cross, but all of these camper bands are completely inspiring & we definitely recommend buying the CD though CDBaby or finding it on iTunes.

Girls Rock Philly is back & better than ever for 2011. Here are a few updates to tide you over in the long, dark, non-camp season:

GIRLS ROCK PHILLY 2011 IS CONFIRMED FOR AUGUST 8-13! Online registration coming soon, so sign up for our mailing list over there on the right side of the page.

Saturday, January 29th: Girls Rock Philly will be a featured organization in the Valentine Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Project upstairs at World Cafe Live that morning. We’ll talk about GRP a little & camper group Army of the Eyes will play a short set!

Tuesday, February 8th: GRP will be the beneficiary of an AWESOME show at the Rotunda at 40th & Walnut Streets in Philadelphia. Featuring Girls Rock volunteers from all over the country, including Whore Paint from Providence & Trophy Wife from right here in town (after relocating from lots of other places).

We won a CityPaper Choice Award!  No surprise here that we have a Big Vision.  We also got some great writeups about our CD release show  in the Philadelphia Metro, the WXPN blog The Key, and Philadelphia Magazine – and we’ll be the December cover story for Origivation Magazine.

We’ve also confirmed that LADIES ROCK CAMP 2011 will be happening from February 19-21 (President’s Day Weekend) at Freire Charter School at 20th & Chestnut. Center City means some great afterparties!  Online applications will be up by Thanksgiving for you to give as holiday gifts to the ladies in your life (including yourself!) & artwork will be up even sooner.  And remember:  every gift of Ladies Rock is TAX-DEDUCTIBLE & pays for a girl’s scholarship at Girls Rock Philly 2011.

Yes, this is a map to the building that houses our BRAND-NEW office & practice space! GRP has just signed a lease for our new home & we couldn’t be happier. We finally have room for all of our gear, a place to meet regularly & a place we can open up for meet & greets, lessons, and possibly even some all-ages events down the line. We move on the weekend of October 16-17 & are currently taking donations of office supplies, file cabinets & furniture, if you have anything to spare. Contact practice(a)girlsrockphilly.org to donate, help us make our move & check out the spaces for yourself.

We are holding our 2nd annual ALL-AGES CD release show on Saturday, November 6th! It’s at Johnny Brenda’s again this year from 12pm -4pm & we have our bands & DJs rehearsing like crazy for it, so spread the word! We’re also planning a few trips up the street for you to check out our new space, since it’s only 6 blocks away.

This will be your first chance to pick up the GRP 2010 compilation CD & showcase DVD; afterwards, you’ll be able to buy it at our events & on our CDBaby page. This is one of our major events of the year & all funds go to support our new space & the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, as part of their 50 Shows In 50 States campaign. Tickets are $5 at the door & kids under 5 can come for free!

But why not attend one of our benefits, like our Gear Drive & Benefit Show on Saturday, May 23rd at Johnny Brenda’s?

Or our 3rd Annual Silent Auction on Sunday, June 7th at 117 South Street?

**Update!** More good news: GRP has received two grants this spring!

Thanks to the Womens Way’s Community Women’s Fund & Open Meadows Foundation for their generous support of Girls Rock Philly. Both organizations do admirable work for their communities & we highly recommend that you check them out & support them if you can.

We’ll also be repping one more time this spring at the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby from 12pm-5pm on Saturday, May 16th. The Kinetic Sculpture Derby is at the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival on the 2000-2300 blocks of Trenton Avenue in the Kensington Neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA.

We’ve got the best news! The Mockingbird Foundation has generously granted us the funds to record our 2009 campers in a studio for a professional compilation album!

We’re just about ready to make some more big announcements — for our silent auction in early summer, for our gear drive in late May & for the big Kahuna, CAMP!

In the meantime, our PR lady Megan has been working overtime: she & Beth just did an interview on G-Town Radio on Sunday (soon to be up in podcast form).
