GRP ON THE ROAD

Music Entrepreneurial “Sound Scholars” Cohort PILOT

Girls Rock Philly (GRP!)  provides a community-driven response dedicated to identifying and deconstructing racial and gender-based oppression while supporting our youth in gaining leadership skills. We use a supportive, multi-generational, peer-mentoring model that encourages fearless expression, artistic experimentation, thoughtful analysis, and imaginative action. As a result of our programs, girls and trans youth in Philadelphia will see themselves as agents of change, recognize their power to challenge the systems and policies that affect them, value the building of caring relationships, and better understand mutual survival. In turn, we believe that our city and our world can and will become a better place.

For those students who are passionate and wish to pursue a career in music, they will proceed through a 12-week, Music Entrepreneurial Cohort which is an expansion of GRP on the Road!. The cohort is designed to provide participants with more in-depth knowledge of the music industry focusing on hidden career opportunities, business management, personal and business taxes, marketing, self-promotion, and most of all how to trademark, distribute, and retain ownership of their work.

GRP Sound Scholars Cohort: Challenging the power structures and status quo that stifle creatives born to make liberatory sound and live a radical existence. Priority on girls of color, trans girls, queer, and non gender conforming youth.

These programs are designed to capture those students who potentially have an interest in a music career but do not have the wherewithal to pursue their dream.  Realistically, most of the youth residing in low-income households will probably not have the financial resources or maybe not the interest in attending a four-year college or university. Tuition for these institutions is now cost-prohibitive for most families.  Some may choose to attend a community college, but many will leave high school and fall into a passionless, minimum-wage grind of day-to-day survival.

We hope to fill this gap by offering an alternative path. Ultimately, our focus is two-fold: (1) Offer services that expose youth to experiences that will help them discover their passions.  We aim to plant seeds of knowledge, thought, and curiosity as it pertain to the complex music industry and show them examples of non-traditional, real-world, obtainable career paths with low barriers to entry. (2) Surround our youth with joy and hope. The world is a crazy place, and it is taking a toll on the psyches of so many of our young people, especially kids who reside in financially challenged communities such as the ones we are targeting. Our children need a reason to wake up every day and we intend to give our all in helping them shake off apathy, low-grade depression, and resist the temptation to engage in self-destructive behaviors.
